##Balance is Key to a Healthy Immune Response
The human immune system is the most amazing military defense the world has ever known. This system reacts, recognizes and responds to the most virulent of attacks on its host at a moment’s notice. Certain factors throw the immune system into a state of imbalance and hyper inflammatory conditions.
The immune response consistently adapts through a remarkable communication process that depends upon trillions of unique proteins, enzymes and receptors. These factors allow it to steadily acclimate to the never ending alterations in its environment to give the body the best chance for survival. Healthy immunity is dependent upon balance between its own super regulatory systems and optimal coordination between the trillions of important compounds.
##Th1 and Th2 Portions of the Immune System:
T- helper (Th) cells are a critical part of the immune system. They are a type of white blood cell called lymphocyte that recognize foreign particles and pathogens and initiate an immune response. Th Cells produce cytokines which are immune messenger proteins that are responsible for carrying out the biological effects of the immune system.
Th1: These are called “cell mediated” immunity, which typically deals with viral and gram-negative bacterial infections. This is the first line of defense against pathogens that get inside of our cells. This is called the bodies innate immune response. This consists of Killer T cells, T helper cells and T suppressor cells. It is also supported by cytokines such as Interleukin-2 (IL-2), IL-12, gamma interferon, IgA and sIgA.
Th2: These cells are responsible for the “humoral-mediated” immune response. They deal with gram positive bacteria, toxins and allergens. This system stimulates the production of antibodies in response to pathogens found outside the cells. This is called the bodies acquired immune response. This system is supported by cytokines IL 4,5,6, 10 and alpha interferon.
**Balance Between the Immune Sub-Systems:
In a healthy immune system, these groups of T helper cells work synergistically to balance the system. They become more active in response to any increase in pathogens or toxins but then they stabilize and reduce their cytotoxic effects once the threat is eradicated.
The key to a strong immune system is balance and coordination. The TH -1 system is classified by Killer T cells, T helper cells, and T suppressor cells. When we have too many T suppressor cells our immune system is too weak and we get colds/fevers/flu’s. When the Killers are too many or the helpers and suppressors too little we end up with a poorly coordinated immune response that damages our own tissue. This is commonly seen in autoimmune disorders.
##th1-th2-balance/polarity...The Maturation of Our Immunity:
At birth, an infant’s immune system is immature and relies primarily on humoral or antibody immunity. As it encounters infectious pathogens and builds symbiotic microbial cultures it develops a robust cellular immunity. Various environmental factors such as the ***use of anti-biotics and vaccines interfere with the development of a healthy cellular immune response. This can be the cause of a TH-2 dominance and resulting hyper-inflammatory conditions.
***Pregnancy is a Th2 dominant phenomenon. The body switches into Th2 dominance during pregnancy so the body doesn’t reject the fetus. If you have a Th1 dominant auto-immune disease, you will feel great during pregnancy because the immunity will balance out. However, if you have a Th2 dominant condition you will feel awful and be at greater risk for miscarriage and congenital disorders in the newborn child.
Sub-System Imbalance Creates Hyper Inflammatory Conditions:

Immune System Imbalance (TH2 Dominance): Overview
---Th1 cells promote cell-mediated immunity while Th2 cells induce humoral immunity.
These two different methods exist by which the body fights infections. While cellular immunity (Th1) directs Natural Killer T-cells and macrophages to attack abnormal cells and microorganisms at sites of infection inside the cells, humoral immunity (Th2) results in the production of antibodies used to neutralize foreign invaders and substances outside of the cells.
In many cases, an infection is fought with both arms of the immune system. At other times predominantly one is needed to control an infection. A healthy immune system is both balanced and dynamic: it should be balanced between Th1 and Th2 activity, switching back and forth between the two as needed. This allows for a quick eradication of a threat and then a return to balance before responding to the next threat. The inability to respond adequately with a Th1 response can result in chronic infection and cancer; an overactive Th2 response can contribute to allergies, various syndromes and play a role in autoimmune disease. In end stage illnesses, both arms of the immune system fail.
Two mechanisms are at work contributing to the development of chronic diseases.
Pathogen defense mechanisms. When an immature immune cell is exposed to a virus, cancer, yeast, or intracellular bacteria (for example mycoplasma or chlamydia pneumonia), a Th1 response should be initiated. Viruses, especially herpes viruses such as EBV, CMV or HHV6, make proteins that mimic a particular cytokine. By this means the virus deceives the immune system into thinking that the threat is not coming from a virus. The immune system counters with too little of a Th1 response, the virus remains concealed and the infection becomes active or chronic. It is now thought that many, if not most, pathogens have this defensive ability.
Immune system imbalance. In the above example, the virus has increased its chances of survival by diverting an immune system which is out of balance. It would have been able to respond more accurately if it were healthier. Immune system health is influenced by how we eat and think, our exposure to chemicals and our genetic heritage. In effect we are being judged as individuals for the poor lifestyle decisions we and our parents have made and as a society for not living in greater harmony with nature.
Th1 cells secrete INF-gamma and IL-2, which activate macrophages and cytotoxic T-cells to kill intracellular organisms; Type Th2 cells secrete IL-4, IL-5, IL-6 and IL-10, which help B cells to secrete protective antibodies.
A failure of the Th1 arm of the immune system and an overactive Th2 arm is implicated in a wide variety of chronic illnesses. These include AIDS, CFS, candidiasis, multiple allergies, multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), viral hepatitis, gulf war illness, cancer and other illnesses. If these two arms of the immune system could be balanced by stimulating Th1 and decreasing Th2, then many of the symptoms associated with these chronic illnesses would diminish or disappear and we would have found the answer to immune restoration and balance or the equivalent of a cure.
@@Treatment and Prevention
A possible line of therapy being investigated by the medical community is to reintroduce some of these cytokines to people who have severe immune deficiencies. This approach can be tricky because large amounts of any particular cytokine can have serious side-effects. Furthermore, their half-life in the body is usually relatively short and they are expensive.
One point to remember for general application with naturally occurring or synthetic immuno-modulators is that when they are taken continuously, at the same dose, they may become less effective. The dose must vary so that the immune system does not reset itself to the old balance point. Adjust the dose up and down as well as stopping use from time to time.
